Newt’s Playing Cards Opens First Playing Card Retail Store in U.S.
CANAL WINCHESTER, OH, Sept. 9, 2003 -- The first store in the U.S. dedicated to family-friendly playing cards is holding its grand opening celebration this month, both online and off. Newt’s Playing Cards, one of the original companies to offer “Iraqi Most Wanted” playing cards, is opening its retail store at 5265 Gender Rd. in Canal Winchester; simultaneously, the company is launching its Web site at www.NewtsCards.com.
Visitors to the bricks-and-mortar store or the Web site will find over 1,700 decks of playing cards to suit every taste, including kids’ cards, educational cards, sports cards, holiday cards, and many other varieties. Some are for collecting, others for playing, but all are suitable for any card games and are intended to encourage people to spend time with family, friends and loved ones, says founder James Esteph. “Playing card games is a great way to slow down and spend some quality time with other folks. In our fast food, fast-paced world we need to be encouraged to slow down and enjoy the moment,” he explained. “We also want to promote the hobby of collecting playing cards. They’re wonderful, inexpensive things to collect, and the options are unending. It’s a perfect hobby to share as a family.”
Along with carrying playing cards from major brands like Bicycle, Carta Mundi, Heritage and Congress, Newt’s publishes its own line of cards with a twist, known as semi-transformational cards in the playing card world. The first deck, WILD!, was just released; a second, called Busy Bears, is due for release in November.
Newt’s also offers 38 different Monopoly games, including Peanuts, Elvis, NFL, NASCAR and Bible versions, as well as gifts for playing card collectors and enthusiasts.
“Whether you collect playing cards, are a serious card player or just play occasionally, you will find a deck of cards that suits everyone at Newt's Playing Cards,” said Bill Dollison, store manager and COO. “We are looking forward to setting the trends for the market.”
